You will need:
- one-half of
an egg carton lid for each child
- four wheels
(approx. 2" in diameter) for each child made from an old chip or
cereal box
- children's
scissors
- one pipe cleaner
for each child
- one rectangular
piece of paper approx. 8" x 4"
- masking tape
- four twist
ties for each child if using a styrofoam egg carton
- wax paper
What to do:
- pre-cut the
egg carton lids in half to create two wagon bases
- pre-cut out
the wheels for the younger children
(four and five year olds may enjoy making their own)
- pre-cut the
covers for the wagons, or let children make their own
- for styrofoam
carton lids, pre-poke holes using the darning needle in the sides
as well as through the wheels to permit each attachment later on
(the twist tie goes through the wheel and then through the wagon side
and is then twisted onto itself to form a 'knot' at either end)
- pre-tear two
pieces of tape and place them on a small piece of wax paper for later
- encourage
children to assemble their wagons
- they may like
to decorate their wagon covers using crayons
- attach the
wheels either by gluing them on
(if cardboard cartons are used) or by attaching them with twist ties
(if styrofoam)
- tape cover
onto base on either side
- poke pipe
cleaner through the front side in two places until ends are poking
out like a handle (you may want to pre-poke holes for the pipe
cleaners to go through as this is quite difficult for young children
to do by themselves)
- label work
- clean up
