TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION

Home Safety:

fire, stairs, toys lying around, plugs and wall sockets, poisons, knives, scissors, climbing when unsafe, etc.

Outdoors:

rakes, shovels, axes, sticks, lawn mowers, gasoline, work sites, matches, power lines, sun stroke, heat exhaustion, frost-bite, hypothermia, etc.

Road Safety:

bikes, crossing the street, icy conditions, wet conditions, traffic signals, seat belts, etc.

Water Safety:

rivers, lakes, boats, life jackets, streams, fast water, ice and water, rescue, etc.

Personal Safety:

body sense, strangers, block parents, phone number, address, first and last name, who to ‘tell’, who can help, block parents

Emergency:

911, or other safety number, distinguishing what is and what isn’t an emergency, how to use a phone, what to say, important facts like don’t hang up until they do (for tracing purposes), know what a dial tone sounds like

 

SETTING THE MOOD

Books:

any books on safety-related issues, ie. books on firemen, books on policemen, books on personal safety, etc.

Displays:

set up displays of signs, ie. ‘bones’, etc. show toys that can cause accidents, ie. roller skates, toy bow and arrow, make a display of what the number ‘911’ will get you, etc.

Posters:

any posters put out by the fire, police, doctor, or other related organizations to help drive home the idea of safety

Videos:

any safety oriented films, videos, ie. boating, fire prevention, block parent safety, etc.

Speakers/

Trips:

police stations, fire stations, St. John’s Ambulance, Red Cross, paramedics, hospitals, safety school, lifeguards, etc.
